From a biblical perspective, your calling is your permanent, overarching purpose to love God, serve Him, and make disciples. Whereas an assignment is the temporary season, location, or role where you carry that purpose out. Your calling remains constant throughout your life, but your assignments will change as God moves you through different seasons, jobs, and mission fields. For example, our current assignment at the Jerusalem School is a beautifully specific way to fulfill our lifelong calling to make disciples. Recognizing this difference keeps you anchored in your identity in Christ, while remaining flexible and obedient whenever God redirects your daily steps.
Verses on Your Calling (Permanent and Eternal)
- Romans 11:29 – "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable."
- Ephesians 4:1 – "Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called."
- 2 Timothy 1:9 – "Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace."
Verses on Your Assignment (Temporary and Situational)
- Acts 13:25 – "And as John was finishing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he.'"
- Colossians 4:17 – "And say to Archippus, 'See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord.'"
- Esther 4:14 – "And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
Verses Combining Both Concepts
- 1 Corinthians 7:17 – "Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him."
- Acts 20:24 – "But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."
It all comes down to this: What does your assignment look like in this current season?
